A new weight loss program in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, starts this Saturday 22 May 2021.
Weight loss coach Mike Smith will deliver the program at Body Basics Health and Fitness Club.
Mike, a Fitness Australia registered health and fitness professional, was a successful Weight Watchers coach. His workshops grew to be among the biggest in Australia and New Zealand.
“The key to weight loss is support, guidance and the weekly weigh-in,” Mike said.
“The group discussion is critical. We realise we’re not alone.”
Kathleen Morrow has signed up for the program.
“As soon as I heard Mike was starting a program I signed up,” Kathleen said.
“Mike’s a fantastic coach.
“His workshops are inspirational and informative.
“Some weeks I feel really bottomed out. I was always glad I forced myself to go to Mike’s workshops. I walked out feeling positive and motivated again.”
Kathleen said: “Weight loss is not always about food and exercise. A lot has to do with mindset. Mike has this knack of uncovering underlying issues.
“He not only listens but he is supportive.
“He helps find strategies to deal with things and occasionally gives you the tough love talk you really need to hear.”
Kathleen said she’s struggled with weight “most of my life”.
“I have underlying health issues and take medication that makes it hard to lose weight,” she said.
“But I know I need to keep trying to stay healthy.
“It’s not always easy. Life, family and stress can be challenging and get in the way. That’s why it’s so great to be with a group. You realise you’re not alone.
“You have support during the bad weeks but most importantly you celebrate the achievements on the good weeks with like-minded people who really understand what you’re going through.
“I’m so looking forward to starting this new adventure with Mike and making some great new friendships.”
The program is $1 a day, $30 a month, for a minimum of three months. There is 20% off for registrations this week.
Body Basics is the largest independent health and fitness club in Queanbeyan. It has been part of the community the past 30 years.
It is owned and run by Margaret Stamatis-Everett and her husband Julian Everett. Margaret was a health and fitness teacher at Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT), the Strategic Health and Fitness Adviser and Injury Prevention Adviser at the ACT Department of Justice and Community Safety and a running coach. She also has a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Julian is a fitness coach, senior health and fitness teacher at CIT and keen surfer. He is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) and has a master’s degree in nutrition and dietetics.
“We have long wanted to more directly help people achieve their weight loss goals,” said Margaret.
“Mike has had great success in this field. We are thrilled to have him on board at Body Basics.”
The latest data from the federal government’s Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows two thirds (67%) of Australian adults are overweight or obese. This is one of the higher rates in the world. It is up from 57% in 1995 and 42% in 1975. The increase is mainly due to a massive jump in obesity rates in Australia from 19% in 1995 to 31% in 2017-18.
The rates are also concerning for young people. Almost a quarter of Australian children and teenagers from 5 to 17 years are overweight or obese. This figure is up from 20% in 1995.
The Australian Government warns that being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. It is associated with higher rates of death.
